Frequently Asked Questions

These are frequently asked questions and for educational purposes of the consumer and general public - in absolutely no particular order. It is recommended to have a consultation with an electrologist (licensed if required by your state) to determine if this is the right treatment for you.

This page will be updated on an ongoing, as needed basis*

  • It is impossible to give a definite clear answer as there are many factors that affect hair quantity and structure including hormones, medications, stress, hair growth cycles, previous method of hair removal, etc. If an area is able to be fully cleared/treated then on average it may take 18-24 mos. or longer; you may only require a quick treatment once a year or even longer at that point to treat the few remaining “stragglers”. The above mentioned factors may increase or decrease this length of time. We invite you in for a consultation to discuss in more detail. goes here

  • Only hairs that are visible at the time of your treatment will be treated. Not all of the hairs are on the same cycle/phase of growth so not every single hair is able to treated at the same time. You may cut or shave those hairs that grow between your treatments so they may be treated at your next visit. This is one of the reasons for frequent treatments initially. The hairs you are seeing are ones that were “grown” at the day of your treatment.

  • There may be too many hairs to treat them all individually in the reserved treatment time, Your hairs may be too long (over 1/2 an inch) which requires your electrologist to spend more time moving the hairs to find the follicle to treat. The galvanic treatment requires more time per hair due to the time the epilator requires to produce the chemical lye, the blend method also requires more time per hair for this same reason.

  • If you are coming for an area like the chin and let’s say you tweeze it, if you know it takes you about 30 minutes to tweeze then you can expect your electrolysis to be around that time range. For larger areas with a large quantity of hair you may need an hour or more to treat. It is best to come in for a consult to determine your needs and receive an estimate.

  • This is impossible to predict. There is a risk of scarring. If you are a person that is prone to keloid scarring or hypertrophic scarring it is important to disclose this to your electrologist - this predisposition does not mean that you will experience this after treatments but you are at a higher risk. If you are prone to ingrown hairs and have a history of poor scarring you also have this risk with ingrown hairs as well, so you need to determine which you prefer.

Many people experience post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) which will resolve after 9-12 mos. and can be managed with topical treatments if you are bothered by it.

  • Electrolysis is able to treat hairs that are not pigmented or white hair or gray hair or blonde hair or even red hair. These may be more difficult to find so it may take more time for your electrologist to find/treat these hairs but they are able to be treated.

  • The thermolysis modality is the application of heat only and is safe during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Some electrologists may require a note from your OB to continue treatment. Treatments to the abdomen, genital area and chest/breasts during pregnancy or breastfeeding will not be continued. Many women experience difficulty conceiving and while it is safe to continue treatments if you fall into this category it is also completely acceptable to defer treatments during this time and resume when you are done with childbearing altogether, this current pregnancy and/or breastfeeding.

You may experience excess hair growth during pregnancy as well (due to the surge of hormones), this should return to your baseline after delivery. Although, sometimes pregnancy may be the impetus to “turning on” new hairs to grow thicker and/or darker.

You absolutely will not be receiving blend or galvanic modalities while pregnant or breastfeeding and if you are actively trying for pregnancy it is important to communicate this to your electrologist and you may temporarily switch to thermolysis.

  • This is completely dependent on you. If you are expecting hair removal prior to a life event like a wedding then the sooner you begin the better; depending on your date (one year, two years, mos., etc.) you may not be able to achieve full permanent hair removal prior to your wedding but you should be at the point where you should not have regrowth for over 3-4 weeks or 1-2mos. or longer.

If you are treating an area like legs or back and you expose these areas in the summer more often, you may want to wait until after the summer in the event you experience scabbing in these areas.

If you are planning on gender reassignment surgery it is best to begin electrolysis as soon as possible! It is important to allow adequate time to achieve permanent hair removal prior to the procedure.

The reality is, we usually put ourselves last and everyone else first. Permanent hair removal is a self care treat. It is also a gift to others in the long run - think about how much more you can get done when you absolutely never have to worry about shaving or bleaching or waxing or tweezing ever again!

The phrase I hear REPEATEDLY is “I wish I did this sooner.” So

  • Yes, this may be treated with electrolysis to achieve permanent hair removal. You will be able to receive treatments after presenting a note from your dermatologist allowing electrolysis to be performed on the spot(s).

Epilator, Apilus xCell description and in use

  • The epilator, or the machine we use is the Apilus xCell. This epilator allows all three of the treatment modalities - galvanic, thermolysis, and blend to be utilized.

  • Yes! New Jersey is a licensed state. If you are a practicing electrologist in New Jersey you are required to be licensed and maintain this licensure and renew it every two years as well as completing continuing education (CEU’s). It is important that electrologists stay relevant and up to date with information regarding their practice. Some electrologists also have additional certification which you may see as C.P.E., CPE, (certified professional electrologist). The CPE designation is an additional certification that is renewed every 5 years to maintain and is not individual to each state. More CEU’s are required to maintain this certification than at the state licensure level.

  • The hairs need to be visible to be treated so you will need to let it grow to be long enough for this, however, you do not want the hairs to be too long (anything over 1/2cm.) as your electrologist will spend more time moving the hairs out of the way of each other to find the follicle insertion point.

Some people opt to have a waxing 2-4 weeks prior to the treatment to attempt to try to have most of the hairs present. This is not necessary and up to the individual.

Drink lots of water! Water helps to increase the effectiveness of the treatments by hydrating the follicles - applying moisturizers and/or serums to the skin does not have the same effect on the follicles. Increased water intake also increases the comfortability of the treatment. Avoid dehydrating the skin with excess caffeine use and diuretics (unless medically necessary).

Avoid excess un exposure/sunburn prior to your treatment. Stop any irritating topical products to the treatment area that contain retinols, AHA (alpha hydroxy acids), BHA (beta hydroxy acids), salicylic acid, etc. 2-3 days prior to your reserved treatment.

  • Common and expected side effects are redness and swelling of the treated areas - if your upper lip was treated you should not expect huge swollen lips but rather pin points dots of swelling where each hair was located. The redness and swelling will be prominent for anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours after treatment, every person is different and some experience some residual redness and/or swelling longer than 2 hours (possibly for 1 or 2 days) post treatment. The degree of severity for each will also vary from person to person - expect to have a similar reaction as you have to a cut or acne cyst or zit.

Some people may experience scabbing, this will also be pinpoint dots of scab more common at the first few treatments or when the treatment strength is intensified or if many shallow hairs are present.

  • The first signs you will begin to notice is that some/most hairs will become less thick or coarse and/or they may become lighter in color or lose their color completely and then you will notice they take longer to grow back. Then you will notice these signs above more in addition to less hairs overall being present.

You will notice that the hair(s) take longer and longer to grow back and there are much less that are growing back until they no longer grow at all.

During treatment: you should not feel hairs being plucked or tweezed. You may however feel some tugging of the hair with some pressure. you may feel tweezing of a hair once in a blue moon especially in a densely populated area if an untreated hair is removed or grabbed with a treated hair or in the occurrence of two hairs in one follicle but you should not feel like every single hair is being tweezed. This tweezing sensation would indicate an inadequate treatment as the hairs should slide right out of the follicle when treated appropriately.

  • Thermolysis, the heat modality of electrolysis is considered an organic treatment - no chemicals used. The probe (made of stainless steel or gold is inserted into the hair follicle extremely brief to apply a burst of heat to break down and cauterize the blood supply. The blend and galvanic modalities will not be the modalities you are seeking as they include the chemical called lye.

Other options that will only provide temporary removal: shaving (but you will apply shaving cream), tweezing, waxing (applies a topical made of varying products), threading, cutting, etc. Keep in mind that waxing, tweezing, and threading actually stimulate the blood supply and may increase thickness of the hair(s) and/or result in faster hair growth.

Electrolysis is the only option for permanent hair removal and thermolysis provides an organic option.

  • Some people opt to use a topical numbing cream like lidocaine prior to the treatment, you may purchase over the counter at a pharmacy or if you have a good relationship with your PCP or dermatologist they may prescribe you a stronger prescription strength lidocaine. Or here is a link to a 10% OTC lidocaine cream. Unless otherwise indicated by your primary care (PCP) you may take an Advil or Motrin or Ibuprofen 20-30 minutes prior to your treatment. Distraction is also a great tool such as listening to music, watching a show or movie, reading (if possible depending on the position you are required to be in), or even talking. We have had clients talk on the phone to friends or family during treatments, sit in on Zoom meetings, work on their laptops, listen to audio books or podcasts, etc. which we do not mind if we are able to work on the area at the same time. If you prefer a genre of music please let us know and we are happy to play that or if you have a podcast you love to listen to.

  • We are unable to speak on someone else’s work.

This is a reason why we take pictures of the area(s) pre-treatment and periodically throughout treatments. You should have had some improvement - in quantity of hairs, lightening of hair color, decrease in thickness/coarseness, slower to no regrowth, less treatment time needed. We do not know how much hair you had at the start of your treatment so we cannot say if there has been any changes. Large areas with a lot of hair or even smaller areas with a large quantity of hair will require more treatments than an area with less hair. If all of the hairs are not treated in an appropriate session time then not all of the hairs are being treated and it will significantly the length of your treatment plan (for example if you require an hour of treatment but are only allowing 15 minute sessions it will take you at least 4x as long as expected to reach your goal). Hormonal causes of hair growth are more difficult to treat, and it is possible that different hair follicles will be stimulated at any point in our lives but improvements should still be noted.

You should discuss these concerns with your current electrologist - you may need to try a different treatment modality or new treatment plan. A major contributor of successful treatments is what is called the “insertion” of the probe, electrologists undergo training for this and the more experience they have it will only be better. However, if you feel it is time to leave it very well may be time to find another electrologist.

  • Pelare is located in Northern New Jersey, in the heart of Bergen County, Paramus. We are anywhere from 20min. -1 hour from New York depending on the time of day/traffic.

Pelare is within reasonable traveling distance and serves (in no particular oder):

  • Firstly, thank you for your honesty in disclosing your status (which we take care to protect BTW). Second, we follow infectious control protocols and disinfect hard surfaces as instructed to do so, and reusable items that are indicated are sterilized appropriately (this is monitored to make sure the equipment is working as it should and the items have been in fact sterilized). Thirdly, this is mostly important for us to know as your provider in the (knock on wood) rare case that we get stuck with a probe used on you; in the event we choose to prophylactically treat we may do so immediately. We will be following the correct protocol for a potential bloodborne pathogen exposure regardless of anyone’s status but we appreciate the fact that we will have this information at our disposal right off the bat.

In short, any communicable or blood transferrable disease is absolutely not a reason not to have electrolysis performed and your disclosing your status to your practitioner will actually provide a sense of relief in the event of your provider gets either punctured with the probe that was used on you and/or tweezers so they do not spend time contacting you to find out your status after the fact.

  • here is some discomfort but electrolysis is generally well tolerated by many people. Every person is different and some people are jumping up in pain at a very low, comfortable setting while someone else can tolerate a very high setting. Some days we are more sensitive to others due to what we eat, how hydrated we are, for women where they are at in their cycle, stress, general body inflammation, etc. and on those days you may not be able to tolerate your usual setting which is fine (we are all entitled to a day) and you should let your electrologist know so they may adjust your settings accordingly at that time.

Some areas are more sensitive than others, generally the upper lip, the front of the legs, the pubic area, and the central part of the axilla (armpit) but you do become tolerant and the discomfort improves with the more treatments you have.

  • You most likely are, it is best to come in and discuss in person, additionally your electrologist may visualize the hairs.

Laser hair reduction treatments does not mean you are excluded from electrolysis. Sometimes people receive laser treatments first to cut down or reduce the quantity of hairs prior to electrolysis so you may reach your goal faster. Some people have received laser treatments and have an increase or have stimulated their hair growth unfortunately. Some people receive laser hair reductions concurrently with electrolysis treatments to reduce the quantity of hairs and also begin the permanent hair removal process. Laser hair reduction treatments may “dry” out your hair follicles which may result in requiring a longer treatment plan or the hydration status of your hair follicles may be unchanged. Nothing is better than a “virgin” hair or hair that has not been tweezed, waxed, threaded, or lasered.

Bottom line is that it does not need to be laser or electrolysis exclusively, but if it is laser you likely will need electrolysis also. And laser and electrolysis may be performed consecutively or concurrently.

  • To reduce the risk of infection, it is not recommended to exercise or sweat (sauna, excess sun exposure), apply make-up to the treated area(s) and also reduce the amount of touching the treated area(s) for 24h. after treatments.

  • Yes! Electrolysis is to remove any hair you do not wish to have anymore regardless of the cause. When researching electrolysis you come across lots of mentioning of medical diseases that cause hair growth, hormonal imbalances/diseases, medications that cause excess hair growth, etc. as it is a known issue for many people and electrolysis is the solution. You don’t need to have a full chin or neck of dark thick hairs to want them permanently gone.

  • Congratulations! What an exciting time!

You certainly may have electrolysis prior to your wedding - besides no longer worrying about having to shave, wax, tweeze, bleach, cut the hairs, use Nair or thread whatever area you are interested in if you are interested in facial hair removal your make-up will sit better and looks its best without any hairs clouting its view or pores. I do not recommend coming in for your first or second or even third treatment very close to your actual wedding day because 1. there is always a risk of bruising, PIH, skin infection, residual swelling, residual redness, etc. and while you may cover with make-up 24h. after your treatment you do not want nor need the added stress of dealing with any of these things the day of your wedding. Plan ahead! Even if you are near the end of your electrolysis journey I still would not recommend a treatment so close to your big day because if you have healed perfectly with absolutely no hiccups for every treatment prior this still may be the one that you have a scab or residual or something - not worth it! When you are that far along your treatment regimen you may have a treatment 5-7 days before your wedding and still enjoy the hair removal with minimal to no regrowth in that time frame - this is why it is recommended to get as many treatments under your belt to be in this great position!

It is recommended to begin your electrolysis journey as far before the wedding as possible. The second you get the thought in your head book your consultation so we may discuss timeframe and expectations and have a general plan for the week-days before the wedding, although this will likely be adjusted closer depending on your progress.

And we can’t wait to see pictures and video of the big day! (Of course, that is if you would like to share!)

  • I am flattered! And yes I have been asked this before - more than once! I so wish I could, trust me! Unfortunately I am licensed to practice electrolysis in NJ only (so lame I know) so I am missing on a vacation. But I will tell you how to manage your hair while you are away and I will miss you and can’t wait to see your pictures and hear all about it! And you better enjoy yourself and don’t give those damn hairs a second thought - Courtney’s orders!

  • Paradoxical hypertrichosis is the phenomenon of an increase in hair growth after laser hair removal or reduction treatments. This more commonly occurs in hormonal areas such as the chin, breasts, upper lip. Paradoxical hypertrichosis does not happen to every person after a laser treatment, it may not happen after the first or even second treatment, it may be a delayed response. It is unknown if it will happen to you and is a risk you have to take if receiving laser hair reduction treatments especially in hormonal areas. If you have an excessive amount of hair for any of those areas it may be less of a risk since the quantity is so high at baseline but that is an individual choice you need to make.

  • Hirsutism is excessive, unwanted hair. It can be a large quantity of hair on the face in any area(s) including the upper lip, cheeks/sideburns, chin, neck, temples. It can be a large quantity of hair on the arms and/or legs.

  • It is our belief that you get what you pay for! We strive to provide excellent care for each person we treat. You are achieving permanent hair removal, while you are in treatment you may feel like there is no end in sight but there is! You actually will have an end to removing hair in X area versus a lifetime of continually shaving and/or waxing and/or threading and/or bleaching - which all have their own cost over a lifetime. This does not mean, by any means, that other electrologists in the area are not offering quality work but we are confident in our abilities and technique.

In addition to providing excellent care, we pride ourselves on education and maintaining our continuing education credits to keep our practice up to date and relevant with the times as well as attending seminars and maintaining professional affiliations. We are equipped to guide you throughout your treatment for any related concerns or expected side effects that may come up and if we are limited by our license then we have excellent relationships with physicians we are comfortable entrusting with your care if necessary. You come first with us and we are available for your concerns even if it is not the next day after your treatment.

Pelare also offers state of the art equipment and practices proper infection control protocols for your safety as well as ours.

You may think you are only paying for 15 minutes of our time but in actuality so much more is included in that - we are continuously assessing your skin, response, progress at each treatment and adjusting your plan as indicated - we are able to do all this with our training and expertise and education.

We understand that at the beginning of your electrolysis treatment when you are seeing us frequently you may benefit from financing and we offer this option for you as well (see button to the right).

  • We LOVE dogs! Unfortunately, they are not welcome in the treatment room with the exception of service dogs. If you require the assistance of your service animal please let us know beforehand as we do clean and sanitize the room after each client but we may allot additional time to clean to reduce the presence of dander for other clients that may have allergies.

There is adequate ventilation in the room and UV filter is also utilized for additional sanitation.

  • No. We will never misguide you. Electrolysis is a slow process and the effectiveness depends on many factors - present hair growth stage, cause of excess hair growth, prior hair removal methods used, quantity of hairs, hair removal methods used during electrolysis treatments, medications and supplements taken, etc.

The hairs did not grow overnight (although we swear some do, especially those gray hairs!) and they will not be gone overnight unfortunately. Slow and steady wins the race! The most important thing to remember that you want to receive quality treatments, you do not want to be inconsistent either.

Laser treatments are recommended about 4-6 weeks apart and after 4 treatments you should improvement and may require some additional touch-ups. Then after 1-2 years you will require maintenance laser treatments and the timeframe is dependent on the person, it may be every 6 mos. or yearly, etc. So in short, hair removal is not achieved in 4-6 treatments with laser.

  • Electrolysis does not stimulate or cause hair to grow. You are more likely back to your baseline. If you have an early (less than 10-15 treatments) positive result as you are describing you are likely experiencing telogen effluvium.

Telogen effluvium is an acute or short period of hair loss/shedding following a major stress to the body such as surgery, chronic stress, pregnancy, chronic disease. The body is busy working on healing more important organs and systems and dedicates its energy there and takes it away from less important functions such as growing hair. The most common example is following pregnancy women complain of losing their hair (not balding but larger amounts with brushing and washing their hair) as the body has just grown another life and focused its energy there and now on producing milk to sustain this life. After about 3-6 mos. the hair will begin to resume growing as it had. It is a temporary state of “hair loss” . Electrolysis is literally putting an irritant of heat, lye, or both directly into a hair follicle - the hair follicles sometimes treat this insult or stress to them as it does the stresses mentioned above and turn off for a short period of time, sometimes anywhere from 2-10 weeks or longer and resume growing.

At Pelare we are always hoping and cheering for you to have great early results but when it is at the beginning of treatments we are hesitant that is telogen effluvium rather than a true positive response.

  • Yes - if you have an active cold sore or herpes simplex infection in the area of treatment you will not receive treatment in that area. If you do not have an active infection you may receive treatment in that area but you can almost expect an outbreak to occur shortly after treatment. Hopefully, you have some treatment on hand for prophylactic treatment and if you do not I suggest you contact your primary care provider to obtain some pills to have on hand, let them know you are planning to receive electrolysis treatments frequently and expect to have outbreaks as a result. IF you do not want to deal with outbreaks then electrolysis is probably not a good solution for you. The act of inserting the probe and then either the chemical or heat signal is enough to cause outbreaks to happen, regardless if you have not experienced any outbreaks in however many years. You also may let your electrologist know to avoid this area and you can still receive treatments elsewhere.

  • No, we do not. Multi-needle electrolysis is the chemical lye modality exclusively. We use a single probe, individually inserted in each hair follicle one at a time with the availability of choosing either thermolysis, galvanic (the chemical lye), or blend (combination of the two). We work as fast as we can - although, we do not compromise the precision of our technique, to treat as many hairs as we can in the time reserved, you can rest assured you are receiving a quality treatment at Pelare.

Each needle of the multi-needle technique also needs to be placed individually and then the chemical produced and applied, and repeated until all hairs are treated.

  • This is an extremely hard question to answer as it depends.

I can tell you a very high number of hairs that I can remove in a minute and that is under perfect conditions - I am able to easily get an insertion each time, the hairs are all dark and thick on fair skin providing great visibility, the hairs are the perfect length so I do not need to move longer hairs out of the way to see where the follicle is, virgin hairs that do not require multiple pulses for an adequate treatment, etc.

This is not always the case. We can treat blonde to non-pigmented hairs which are more difficult to see and may take us some time to visualize and find the follicles, or the hairs may be quite long especially in areas like the hairline or nape of the neck, or underarms, or arms, etc. and we need to move the longer hairs out of the way to visualize where the follicle actually is and this takes time away from our actual treatment.

We do not think it is fair to give you a number based on “perfect” circumstances especially when we do not know what your hair situation is. We can reassure you that we work as fast as we possibly can but we will not compromise your treatment by attempting to work faster to treat all the hairs in less time and essentially give you less of a quality treatment. We always attempt to give great insertions and deliver the correct amount of energy necessary for appropriate and adequate and safe treatments.

  • No, we do not. We are regulated by the New Jersey state board of medical examiners and they only a physician to do skin tag removals as well as cherry angioma removals. You can go to your trusted dermatologist for these removals at this time.

  • At this time, I am not an aesthetician. Although, who knows what the future may hold?

I currently have an active electrolysis license and I additionally maintain my central sterile processing and distributing certification.

  • I am not certain, while I have experienced electrolysis I do not have any tattoos so I cannot say yes or no for certain. I have not had feedback from someone with a tattoo nor asked but I have been asked this many times by someone without tattoos.

  • We charge for a consult because we value your time. We are dedicating and reserving time for you to discuss, assess, and create an individualized plan for your care. We believe it is extremely important for you to be educated and informed in your care as well as included. We do not believe in rushing you in and out or not having time to answer your questions. A consult can range from 10 minutes to an hour depending on your questions. We will apply your consultation fee to your first treatment if you decide to begin your electrolysis journey. If you are receiving a trial or spot treatment you are receiving a discounted price for this in addition to the information received. If you are receiving a consult and certain you are going ahead with treatment that day, we will waive the consultation fee and you will only be charged for your treatment.

  • I chose Pelare by Courtney Champy because I believe that including my name is essentially attaching my reputation. Putting my reputation on the line is important and is meant to give you a sense of security that this is where my devotion is, this is/you are important to me if I am taking responsibility and especially being trusted by you, your friends, and your family.

I chose “pelare” because it is Italian and to honor my Italian roots. I,n my opinion it sounds pretty and relaxing (although I am sure I don’t say it correctly since I don’t speak Italian), and I think it looks nice visually. I did not want to include “electrolysis” or “hair” or other words that I have seen commonly for other electrology practices but I still wanted relevancy to hair removal. Also, “hair” originated in Latin as pilar or pilus.

I like unique and thoughtful names and words. A lot of thought went into that 6 letter word!

  • Insurance companies consider electrolysis to be cosmetic (this is not the view of Pelare) and therefore they do not generally cover this service.

However, in the case of transitioning clients it may be a covered service depending on your insurance plan and coverage. I am not in-network with any insurance companies. You will be responsible for payment at the time of treatment and you may attempt to submit to your insurance company on your own for reimbursement if you would like.

If you have a question you do not see here, please submit your question through the form to the right. We will get back to you ASAP and your question may be featured on this page.
